Career Counselling -- Tips
Speech by Chetan Bhagat at Symbiosis
Don’t just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.
There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.
"Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die. ……………….
One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? …………….
It's ok, bunk a few classes, scoring low in couple of papers, goof up a few interviews, take leave from work, fall in love, little fights with your spouse. We are people, not programmed devices........." :)
"Don't be serious, be sincere."!!

Job Satisfaction
It is the biggest illusion that you will get satisfaction in your job. I tell you there is no such a thing as job satisfaction. This word should be eliminated from the dictionary !Satisfaction can only come to you by going deep within you, by praying, by singing and celebrating. Job you do is to maintain your family, your circumstances for financial security and all these reasons
--- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Rahul Commented on this topic:
Yeah that's true.
My mentor friend says that in the beginning we talk about Job and Job satisfaction. Later it is nothing more than a place where we go and earn to pay the EMI's.
Job satisfaction is when you are able to maintain the balance between professional life and personal life. If you are not getting enough time for your kids and family, that means you are in a wrong place for wrong reason. Afterall whom you are working for? The company or Yourself or for making your and your family's life better? Think and Act.

According to me,choosing right job is most difficult task. Choose a job according to our skills-sets,our comfort zone and most vital aspect is Passion.I think passion is more important aspect, because if we are not comfort enough or not having sharp skill-set in any particular thing, but having passion of that thing, then we will get rid on our weak factors with respect to time. But Passion is the only thing which not depends on time. If we have Passion, then suddenly we started to enjoy whatever we are doing and ready to accept any challenge. And such positive attitude is definitely helps us to achieve our
goals.

An individual will never be satisfied until and unless the greed within the individual will die... Some times it is true that deserving people don't get what they are suppose to and that leads to the question of job satisfaction but the former statement is more true.

Dream Career, What is missing?
Most of us are thinking that getting a job, secured job, economically growing, fixed working hours & have enough holidays is the Success. This article is written for everyone who is employee and one who wants to achieve dream career.
I want to focus on important points, which we should think of and ponder on it. Following points you will find that they are not taught in our curriculum.
1. Communication Skills:
Early in childhood our parents and teachers taught us mannerism of how to speak? How to introduce yourself? .Once we grow we forget the importance of communication skills. As we grow we find friends matching our thoughts, friends that you like & they like you.
But when you will come to profession situation is different, you will come across different kind of colleagues & managers. Here your communication skills will be tested. Like how to convey the right information in minimum words? How to persuade others mind? How you take critical decisions and convenience boss/manager for the same.
The best think to improve communication skill is think yourself as a leader and start talking with yourself that how you will discuss with colleague & how you will convey the information.
2. Self Confidence:
I will relate it to decision making ability. As you know doing right thing at right time is very important. Since teenage we have habit to take other’s opinion for every decision. Have you asked to yourself, am I getting what I want? Am I talking responsibility of what I want?
The essential things for self confidence are being calm, focused, vision, time management. This will happen with regular exercise and meditation.
3. Individual Performance/Team Work:
In our education system we learn the importance of team work, but never had any practical or theory exam for the same?
Once you come into the professional forget about individual performance and know that you are a team member and focus on how you contribute in the team to gain maximum efficiency of a product cycle. Follow the Leader and Be a Leader.
4. Personal Interest:
When you are making decision to make career in specific stream of technology, it is very important for every individual to think of what you like and what you don’t like. There should not be any blaming game after 2-3 years of your career, like I want to do something else but now I caught up this.
Your career graph will be growing only when you put 100% of yourself on the work. This will only happen when you love what you work. For this you need to self introspect yourself about what is your life purpose? What will be the best opportunity for you? How you want to see yourself after 5years, after 20 years?
If you are not clear with your decision, you must have to take advice from your parents, best friends, teachers, astrologist, spiritual leader, and physiologist. As once you made decision it is not an easy task to take U turn and start with new path.
5. Settled mentality:
We always want to live in comfort zone. Though we all know that we are living in competitive & innovative world still our inertia carries laziness and search for comfort zone. I want to give you an example what happens when we get job.
When we were young, we struggle for marks and grads then for getting first job. Once we find the job we struggle to survive there for initial training period. Within one year we come to know how to tackle, handle situation and you come to know in and out of the work environment there. The job becomes daily routine, we stop study, we stop learning new things and thus we make our attitude to expire self.
Be learner, learner will never get older. Don't die without teaching others what you learned best.
6. Attitude:
We put limitations on our self. Weather I can do it? Can I take this responsibility? How can I handle the situation if anything goes wrong? Also you have lot of attachment to group/area/college/community from where you came. This people think I am great and I know everything. They can’t think someone equal to me. Always do the comparison and takes situation on the Ego and want to handle the situation on individual basis.
Our attitude should not limit to individual, we must understand the importance of multitasking, and we should go beyond the self & think of serving the world.
7. Approach:
Days are gone when first job is my last job, I am happy with working hours, holidays and retirement plans. You have to come out of this cycle and grow as a businessman/organizer/entrepreneur. As going forward job type is changing from permanent job to contract basis, training period is increased from 3 months to 3 years, no retirement benefits, jobs are coming like total business oriented where employee is just like Use and throw. There is no more job security.
You have to utilize your spare/part time to create a solid foundation for your future financial security.
Coming generation is competitive so that you must be competitor only JOB will not fulfill your dreams.
